Does Cheese Have Carbs? The Keto Truth From Real Wisconsin Cheesemakers

Short answer: barely.

Long answer: most aged & natural cheeses are practically carb-free, which means cheese is one of the great unsung heroes of the keto, low-carb, & high-protein diet world.

Here's the actual breakdown by cheese type, plus the keto cheese list you can screenshot & save.

Cheesy Takeaways

  • Most aged natural cheeses have less than 1 gram of carbs per serving.

  • Aged cheddar, parmesan, gouda, and swiss are effectively zero-carb.

  • Cheese curds are extremely keto-friendly: about 1 gram of carbs per ounce.

  • Avoid cheese spreads, processed cheese slices, & flavored cheeses with added sugars.

  • Cheese is high in protein & fat, which makes it a near-perfect keto snack.

How Many Carbs Are In Cheese?

Most aged & natural cheeses contain less than 1 gram of carbohydrates per ounce. Some contain literally zero. The reason is simple chemistry. Milk has carbs (in the form of lactose), but during cheesemaking, most of that lactose drains away with the whey.

Whatever lactose stays behind in the curd gets eaten by bacteria during aging. The longer the cheese ages, the closer to zero its carb count gets.

Here's a rough lookup table, sorted from "basically zero carbs" to "watch out":

Is Cheese Keto-Friendly?

Most cheese is extremely keto-friendly. It checks every box:

  • High in fat (the macronutrient keto runs on)

  • High in protein

  • Low to zero in carbs

  • Calorically dense (you stay full)

  • Naturally portable & shelf-stable in many forms

The catch: "cheese" is a category that includes both "6-year aged cheddar" and "the orange spread that comes in a tube." Stick to natural, aged, single-ingredient cheeses & you're golden. Our entire aged cheese collection is keto-friendly by default.

Cheeses to Watch on Keto

Most cheese is fine. A few things to side-eye:

  • Flavored cream cheese spreads with added sugar (strawberry, honey-walnut, etc).

  • "Cheese product" or "pasteurized cheese food" labels. Often has fillers & added carbs.

  • Cheese-flavored snacks (crackers, dips with chips, cheese-flavored pretzels). The cheese is innocent. The carrier is not.

  • Cottage cheese, which has a few more carbs than aged cheese due to the lactose.

If you want the carb count, read the label. If you want a one-stop shop where every product is naturally low-carb, our shop doesn't list a single processed cheese slice.

Aged Cheese Is Also Lactose-Friendly

Bonus for the keto-and-also-lactose-sensitive crowd: most aged cheeses are also effectively lactose-free for the same reason they're carb-free. The lactose drains out & the bacteria eat the rest.

Our low-lactose aged cheese guide lays out the specifics if you're navigating both diets at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cheddar cheese keto?

Yes. Aged cheddar is one of the most keto-friendly cheeses on the planet. It contains essentially zero carbs & is high in fat & protein. Aged cheddar like our 8-year, 13-year, or 17-year is effectively zero-carb.

Are cheese curds keto?

Yes. Cheese curds contain about 1 gram of carbs per ounce, making them an excellent keto snack. They are also high in protein, which makes them more satiating than most processed keto snacks.

How many carbs are in mozzarella cheese?

Fresh mozzarella has about 0.6 to 1 gram of carbs per ounce. Aged mozzarella (the firm yellow kind on pizza) trends lower. Both are keto-friendly in normal serving sizes.

Is parmesan cheese keto?

Yes. Aged parmesan has near-zero carbs per serving. It is one of the most concentrated, flavor-dense, keto-friendly cheeses you can buy.

Can you eat cheese on a low-carb diet?

Yes, & you should. Most natural cheeses are low-carb to zero-carb, high in protein, & filling. Stick to aged, single-ingredient cheeses & avoid flavored spreads or processed slices.

What's the lowest-carb cheese?

Aged cheddar, parmesan, & aged gouda all clock in at near-zero carbs per serving. The longer the aging, the lower the lactose, the closer to zero the carb count.
